In the meantime, here are some tips for how to best manage your situation during common emergencies:
If a bracket has become loose, it needs to be repaired by Dr. Mason. If a wire must be cut, use fingernail clippers that have been disinfected with alcohol.
If you’re experiencing extreme discomfort caused by an orthodontic wire, try to move the wire away from the irritated area by placing an eraser or piece of cotton there. If the wire cannot be moved, do your best to cover the end of the wire with the cotton (or some wax).
If you’ve lost a separator, do not worry, as this happens often. However, do call our office to check whether or not you need a replacement.
If you’re experiencing discomfort or tenderness following the placement of braces (or after a routine adjustment), this is completely normal. Feel free to take a non-aspirin pain reliever. Use warm salt water and swish the mixture several times a day. It is normal for patients to experience discomfort with braces for 1-2 weeks.
