If you have orthodontic issues that need correction, you may be thinking about getting braces. Many people opt for traditional metal braces because they are strong and have a long track record of success. However, others want a more aesthetically pleasing treatment, so they choose ceramic braces instead. Is one option better than the other? This blog post aims to help you compare your choices so you can make a well-informed decision about which one is right for you.

What Do They Have in Common?

Metal braces and ceramic braces work in fundamentally the same manner. They involve the use of brackets, which get bonded onto the outward-facing surfaces of the teeth. A wire connects the brackets and places gentle, sustained pressure on the teeth in order to gradually shift them into their perfect positions.

What Is Different?

Although ceramic and metal braces work similarly, there are some big differences between them:

  • Appearance. Metal brackets and wires are highly visible on the teeth. Ceramic brackets, on the other hand, are clear. Therefore, they are much less noticeable.
  • Comfort. Ceramic brackets tend to be smoother than metal ones, so they may feel more comfortable in the mouth.
  • Staining. Ceramic brackets can stain due to their light color. Usually, patients are advised to limit their intake of highly pigmented foods and beverages. (You can reduce staining by drinking pigmented beverages through a straw.)
  • Durability. Both types of braces are durable. However, metal braces are able to withstand greater forces. For example, metal braces are more likely to hold up if you play sports. Both types of braces tend to do just fine during everyday eating.
  • Ability to handle severe cases. Some types of tooth movements are easier with metal braces than they are with ceramic braces.
  • Price. For comparable cases, ceramic braces may have a higher cost than metal ones.

Which Should You Choose?

Both ceramic and metal braces are effective orthodontic treatments, and neither one is necessarily “better” than the other. Your orthodontist can help you consider your options and choose the one that best fits your circumstances.

Usually, ceramic braces are best for image-conscious individuals who want to straighten their teeth without having to continuously take their treatment in and out of their mouth (as is necessary with clear aligners). Metal braces are excellent for complex cases, as well as for individuals who are looking to keep their care as economical as possible.

Are you in the process of considering your orthodontic treatment options? Either ceramic or metal braces might be right for you!
