Bruxism, which is also known as teeth grinding and clenching, is a condition that afflicts millions of people. Do you struggle with this issue? If so, you might wonder if it will have any bearing on your prospects for orthodontic treatment. Specifically, you might be curious about whether you can get Invisalign if you grind your teeth. Your orthodontist is the best person to discuss that with you. Before your consultation, though, you can read this blog post to gain an overview of the relationship between teeth grinding and clear aligners.

Can Teeth Grinding Ruin Your Aligners?

Invisalign’s aligners are designed to fit over the entire visible surface of the teeth, including the portions of the teeth that contact each other during episodes of bruxism. If you habitually grind and clench while you are wearing your aligners, the force of your teeth moving against one another might warp or break your aligners. This risk is greatest among individuals who brux at night; they are not aware of what they are doing and cannot force themselves to stop.

That might sound discouraging, but there is good news. Since Invisalign patients switch to a new aligner every couple of weeks, you will probably transition to a new aligner before your grinding and clenching causes any serious damage. If serious damage does occur, though, you should call your orthodontist. They might have to order a replacement for you.

Many people with bruxism can get approved for Invisalign treatment. However, if you have to wear a nightguard (a special device that prevents nighttime bruxism), you may not be a candidate. Nightguards are not compatible with clear aligners.

Invisalign May Help Your Bruxism

Bruxism can be caused by a number of different issues, one of which is dental misalignment. If that is true in your case, Invisalign may actually reduce your tendency to brux as you progress through your treatment. When you finish with Invisalign, you might be free of bruxism altogether!

Invisalign can be helpful in another way. If you brux while you are awake, the sensation of the aligners grinding against one another can remind you of what you are doing and motivate you to stop.

What Should You Do?

Bruxism might affect your candidacy for Invisalign — or it might not. Talk to a qualified care provider to find out which orthodontic options are suitable for your unique case.
